Jo Guldi (week 6 by Mila Oiva based on Guldi´s materials)
In the last five years, topic modeling has emerged as one of the most flexible tools for “distant reading” an electronic body of text. In this hands-on workshop, Dr. Guldi will present a basic introduction to topic modeling, the seminal contributions of Columbia University’s David Blei, and the reading skills necessary to move between close and distant reading. Participants will leave with classroom-ready materials and tools to begin working with their own texts. Examples will be presented from a topic model of the nineteenth-century debates of Britain’s parliament.
